A Fished Called Wanda
1988 Caper, Comedy

i remember watching this movie when i was really young and thinking it was the funniest thing in the world. of course, i didn’t understand half of the jokes and all the sexual innuendo was lost on me. rewatching a fish called wanda over a decade after it was released was a trying experience. for the most part, the script was witty and clever. but over ten years later, the jokes start to get a little stale.

it was difficult for me to believe that all of the men in the film were falling for jamie lee curtis’s character. it’s still difficult for me to believe that jamie lee curtis was ever considered “hot” by the majority of the male population. blech! anyway, kevin kline was pretty funny as a pseudo-intellectual assassin. (another unbelievable thing to me is that he actually won an oscar for this role!) john cleese reminded me of every perverted old fart i’ve come across. seeing him naked (or nearly) scared the bejesus out of me. maybe he was considered “hot”, too, back then — right up there with jamie lee curtis.

for a comedic caper flick, a fish called wanda is lukewarm. i suppose it started a certain type of genre that has since evolved into bigger and better comedies, but it can’t hold a candle to some of my favourites.

Final Thoughts
funny… for the eighties.
