Blade Trinity
2004 Action
this film was essentially “blade meets van wilder”. with wesley snipes’s gritty portrayal of the comic-book vampire slayer and ryan reynolds’s signature comic relief, this film had too many slow-motion action sequences mixed with an inordinate amount of laugh-out-loud moments.
the insertion of abigail whistler, played by jessica biel, was part of the filmmakers’ vain attempt to keep the blade story young and appealing. in general, the crack-team of smart-alecky, youngster vampire hunters fails to fit into the overarching blade narrative. what is this, buffy: the vampire slayer? oh, and there’s a blind girl now, just for some political correctness. while i don’t have a problem with a blind person suddenly being added to the script, i do find it odd that she is shown manning the surveillance system and utilizing computer monitors. and dracula? come on! why did he look like a gigolo? why are vampires constantly being portrayed as hypersexual sex-trade workers? sure, they suck blood, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they also suck… er, other things.
the clashing ensemble of comic-book action and national lampoon-esque humour makes blade: trinity an eyesore for die-hard blade fans and haphazard viewers alike. it’s good for a few noteworthy — and completely out-of-left-field — jokes, a vast amount of which coming from mr. van wilder himself.
