Coach Carter
2005 Drama

  • i always feel like punching samuel l. jackson’s face through the screen, because he usually acts the same in every. single. movie. this time around, he was still pretty much shaft, but in a suit and tie. so that was different.
  • although it is actually based on a true story, the storyline was terribly cookie-cutter.
  • the stereotypical inner-city street-kids, whom the stereotypical iron-fisted coach is supposed to teach lessons both on and off the court, were actually pretty decent actors.
  • minus ashanti. i hate ashanti — her and her sideburns.
  • i liked the use of the quote from nelson mandela’s inaugural speech. (“our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”) mostly because i actually knew where it was from. usually i’m the slack-jawed yokel who can never pick out brainy allusions in films.
  • although the movie had a good message, it got very preachy at times. so people who don’t go to post-secondary are doomed for the rest of their lives? hey, i’m in university and i’m pretty sure that i’m doomed for the rest of my life.

Final Thoughts
smarter than your average sports film, but only slightly.
