Fahrenheit 9/11
2004 Documentary

i’m not going to go on a political rant here, because i know what can happen if you expose too many of your political beliefs on the internet. so, for brevity’s sake, let’s just say that i don’t really care for george w. bush. but even though i don’t like bush very much, i still didn’t know much about his connection to big business and what he has at stake in the war. michael moore sort of filled in the blanks for me.

yes, michael moore is biased. name one person who isn’t; even the dali lama has ulterior motives. documentaries, although supposed to present an “objective” perspective of their topic, always end up being skewed and subjective. just look at that supersize me documentary. of course you’re going to get sick eating mcdonald’s for every freakin’ meal; it’s unhealthy to eat anything for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday. anyway, i digress.

not only was fahrenheit 9/11 informative and eye-opening, it was also emotional and personal, as moore brings you right into flint, michigan, his own hometown which he believes has been socially devastated by poverty (don’t know, never been there). growing up in a city like that, you’re bound to want answers. moore is on a constant search for answers to why he and the people around him have had to suffer not only from an increasing unemployment rate, but also from being a huge target for military recruiters. the footage of many minorities being refused the right to contest bush’s election in 2000 and of moore personally asking members of congress if they would allow their own children to fighting the war blew me away. what really got me thinking was moore’s question: “if you were george w. bush, would you want to please the american public that pays you a few million to be president or would you help out business associates, who offer you billions of dollars and who also invest in your friends and family?” something along the lines of that.

i like how michael moore backs his facts up. like any good essay writer, he can also swing the facts to his advantage. a lot of people have criticized moore, saying that some of the things in his documentaries have been taken out of context. i doubt any of us will ever find out the honest-to-goodness truth, but even if just 10 percent of fahrenheit 9/11 is true, bush should never be re-elected. what makes me sick is the idea that american soldiers are risking their lives for their nation while the bush daughters are out partying and posing for fashion spreads in vogue.

Final Thoughts
a well-made and compelling documentary.
