i’m not sure whether to classify this movie as a romantic comedy or not, because it sure as hell wasn’t romantic or comedic. this film did a belly flop in ratings and never quite resurfaced for air.

this movie rubbed me wrong in every possible way. the character pair-ups were not convincing, the dialogue was corny and lame, and the overall storyline was severely lacking in excitement. throughout this entire film, my sister and i were laughing our heads off during moments where we were supposed to be crying and crying out of sheer frustration during the scenes where we were supposed to be laughing. colin firth tries earnestly to be funny in hope springs but fails miserably because he is usually typecasted as a brooding mr. darcy. seeing him wearing a scarf for a bra is only funny in a pathetic sort of way, like the way you laugh at bums on the side of the street who play horrible music on their poorly whittled piccolos (oh, wait. am i the only person who laughs at them?).

i really love colin firth, so you can imagine my disappointment with hope springs. despite his best efforts, this movie was just a blip on the hollywood radar, unremarkable and hardly worth the watch — unless you really love colin firth.
