Intolerable Cruelty
2003 Comedy, Romance

i suppose among the really good movies that i had come across in the last month or so, i was bound to be sorely disappointed by one sooner or later. i just really wished i hadn’t wasted two hours of my life watching this train wreck. i could have been sleeping, or something.

george clooney plays a jaded divorce lawyer who meets his match in a very determined gold-digger (catherine zeta-jones). great movie concept? maybe. well executed? hardly. the whole movie revolves around the impossibility of love where a pre-nuptial agreement is involved.

clooney and zeta-jones, two actors at the top of their game, star in this unremarkable pseudo-romantic comedy by the coen brothers. i’d have rather watched a slapstick farrelly brothers film than this cinematic monstrosity. ok, perhaps i am being too mean. i just really didn’t find anything interesting about this movie (except for, perhaps, catherine’s flawless beauty and expensive dresses). it wasn’t funny, it wasn’t romantic, and it wasn’t memorable.

a couple of passably funny scenes to watch out for (if you dare rent this movie) are ones that involve a very confused asthmatic assassin.

Final Thoughts
the coen brothers wouldn’t happen to be conjoined twins who share the same humourless brain, would they?
