Mean Girls
2004 Comedy
i wanted to watch this movie for a long-ass time, but never got around to it because all of my friends (mostly guys) and boyfriend said it was a “chick flick”. after finally watching it, i can say that mean girls is anything but a conventional chick flick.
although mean girls does fall under the category of “teeny film” with the same old high school hierarchy — the popular crowd, the geeks, the lame teachers, etc. — it captures these conventional cliché in a rather hilarious and adult fashion. (and when i say “adult”, i mean adults can appreciate it, too; not that it’s filled with graphic sex scenes and gore.) tina fey did a fantastic job writing the screenplay, largely inspired by the book queen bees and wannabes by rosalind wiseman, a parent’s guide to helping their daughters through common high school problems.
lindsay lohan fares very well as a comedic actor in mean girls, though i’ve never seen any of her other films to compare, except for the updated version of the parent trap (i thought she was british for the longest time!). the other actors do a great job, as well. the appearances of the saturday night live cast were so funny, especially amy poehler as the “hip mother”.
i thought that the resolution of the film was a bit idealistic, but that’s just the cynic in me talking. it would be nice if every high school could solve their problems like that.
