Nineteen Eighty-Four
1984 Drama, Sci-Fi
the coolest thing about this movie is that it was actually released in the year 1984. and john hurt, who plays winston, also played mr. ollivander in harry potter and the philosopher’s stone. besides that, it was a complete waste of my time. yeah, yeah… i know: “but the book is great! how can you not enjoy george orwell’s work?” i agree that orwell had some excellent ideas in his literature, but, well, the thing is, this movie wasn’t actually created by orwell. it was made by some british fop who had a great sense of the book but a bad sense of what it takes to make a captivating movie.
i try not to compare novels with movies too much because i understand they are two different media of expression. however, this is one book that should have remained words on a page, as opposed to crap on a screen. someone coerced me to watch it (he had read the book in class and wanted to see the movie version). ten minutes into the film, i knew i would hate it. and since i don’t like starting a movie and then having to stop it, i suffered through over two hours of the most incredible shit i have ever seen in my life — even worse than intolerable cruelty; even worse than a souldecision video.
i could perhaps discuss the acting and how it was “simply excellent” or how shocked i was to see some woman’s hairy bush in a nasty full frontal, but i won’t. because i can’t find anything compelling to say about nineteen eighty-four, i really can’t.
