Shrek 2
2004 Animation, Comedy, Fantasy
ah, shrek… how i love thee. this movie was just great! when i first heard that the makers of shrek were in the process of putting together a sequal to the first hilarious film, i must admit that i was a tad bit sceptical. other movies, especially those horrible disney sequels to the lion king, the little mermaid, aladdin, etc., have completely bombed in the past. however, after viewing the second part of dreamworks’ shrek, i have regained my faith in the sequel.
the jokes in the second movie were just as funny as the first, albeit a bit cruder. but that’s what i love about shrek: its ability to appeal to a younger audience with simple jokes while still captivating the attention of adults with its subtle grown-up humour. the first shrek movie was centred more on the fairytale elements of the story, whereas the second had more pop culture references and spoofs, which i also heartily enjoyed. i can’t really pick a favourite, since both were equally funny.
of course, with any cartoon film, watching it in the theatre was a mini-disaster. kids everywhere… crying, whining, puking. (jess knows what i mean.) if you want to catch this flick in the theatre, i suggest you watch it at night, when all the toddlers have cried their heads off for the day and have gone off to bed to dream of sugarplums and hilary duff.
