The Day After Tomorrow
2004 Action

although there have been some terrible reviews of this movie floating around, i found it to be quite entertaining. i think the film achieved what it primarily set out to do, and that is to entertain the masses with action, action, action.

you can really tell that the makers of independence day worked on this movie — they seem to love the “end of mankind” genre. there is so much CG in this film that i felt the actors must have been walking around a blue screen the entire time of filming. regardless, the special effects were awesome. i can’t believe how far movies have come with the help of computers; everything just looked so real. the message of the film was very clear: mankind should not abuse nature without expecting consequences, blah, blah, blah… it all seemed like a big geography lesson to me. “desalinization” — what the hell is that? the north atlantic what? i thought they kept the real reason behind the natural disaster vague enough so it didn’t confuse the audience and specific enough so it didn’t seem implausible.

jake gyllenhaal has been getting a lot of flack for starring in the blockbuster action flick, but i thought he did a really good job in it. he didn’t play some corny prick; he was the sort of guy i wouldn’t mind taking home to mom. dennis quaid looked pretty good in the day after tomorrow, too. i’ve always thought he was good-looking. meg ryan must be kicking herself for dumping him for russell crowe and then getting the shaft herself. emmy rossum is so pretty in this movie, even with a gangrenous leg. she reminds me of a younger, prettier shannon elizabeth.

Final Thoughts
intense action, flaccid story.
