The Joy Luck Club
1993 Drama

call me a sissy nancy-boy (even though i’m a girl), but i cried like a baby throughout this entire movie. i don’t know if it’s because i am also the child of a chinese immigrant or because i am just so happy to see asians portrayed as something other than triad gangsters in a film.

the joy luck club weaves the relationships of four mothers and daughters in one beautiful story. their experiences are emotional, heart-warming, and moving. i’ve seen this movie a few times in the past, and every time my heart just goes out to the painful experiences of the mothers.

my favourite story from the movie is probably that of rose, played by rosalind chao (alongside weekend at bernie’s andrew mccarthy). it sucks that such a great actress has been designated to token asian principal on the oc.

there’s not much else i can say about this movie, except that i’m pretty sure most men will not enjoy it as thoroughly as their female counterparts. i’m not trying to be sexist, but that’s what i’ve noticed in the past. there isn’t much action, just a lot of talking… but it is through the talking where you will see a lot of interesting development in each of the characters.

Final Thoughts
very powerful.
