The Whole Nine Yards
2000 Comedy

since the sequel to this movie is already out, i thought i’d finally get off my ass and rent the first one (only to discover that one day later it was on television, damn!). the whole nine yards is hilarious but only at rare intervals.

matthew perry plays, yet again, a pathetic, silly, little man — this time, in the form of a dentist. bruce willis is tremendously funny as contract killer jimmy “the tulip” tudeski. natasha henstridge seems a bit out of place and old-looking compared to love-interest matthew perry. and amanda peet is… well, naked.

this is probably one of the few movies i’ve seen where they purposefully set the film in canada, as opposed to filming the movie in canada and pretending it’s new york, california, or south dakota. i understand that the french music was supposed to be part of the montréal backdrop, but it seemed oddly placed during some parts of the movie.

the funniest scenes i can remember are when amanda peet trips while walking down a hill, when matthew perry runs into big-guy michael clarke duncan, bouncing cleanly off of him into a lamp, and when somebody farts during the stakeout in the garage. that really isn’t saying much, though.

Final Thoughts
funny, but not that funny.
