What Lies Beneath
2000 Horror, Suspense

unlike the scream trilogy and other slasher flicks, what lies beneath provides audiences with an organized plot and elaborate back-story. i love the dynamic between michelle pfeiffer and harrison ford in this film; they work very well together in the different angles of their relationship. the more i listen to harrison ford now, the more i notice just how old he’s getting. it’s nice to know that he can still act, though. well, maybe hollywood homocide isn’t a good example of that.

the cinematography of what lies beneath is perfect for its genre. the shots of the lake and of the house add to the mystery and darkness of the story. the computer graphics (e.g., the bridge) were kind of crappy, but they worked well in the ghostly apparations in the bathroom and other places. i also love how this movie gets you ready to believe one thing and then takes a sharp turn into a different direction, but it does this not so abruptly that it loses and confuses its audience.

you know, i’m probably giving this film too much credit and most people probably think of it as just another horror flick, but it is so much more than that. i own the dvd and i’ve watched it about four times already, and i still get freaked out. it makes me never want to take a bath again (though i probably will have to sooner or later, like, for a job interview or something).

Final Thoughts
does for bathtubs what psycho did for showers.
