Zack and Miri Make a Porno
2008 Comedy
I probably wouldn’t have paid to watch this movie, but I got passes to a free screener so I figured, “What the hell.”
There is something about the way Seth Rogan can deliver a line, replete with F-bombs, that makes it hilarious. Here is this pudgy, curly-haired, run-of-the-mill dude (from Vancouver, by the way) who has carved out a little niche for himself in Hollywood—and it works. Elizabeth Banks played a believable desperate friend who can dish out the nasty language just as well as Rogan can. The two work together well in this film as two platonic friends who have not done anything special with their lives, until they decide to make a porno.
The porno brings them together, along with new friends, in a way that their boring lives have not allowed them to connect. While the movie manages to provide some memorable scenes and dialogue, it did not flow well and the romance almost seemed forced into Kevin Smith’s dirty-joke-laden script. (On a side note: many critics focus on Kevin Smith’s gratuitous use of swear words and dirty language as distinctive and off-putting, but I actually find it realistic. Most people’s group of friends really talk like that—well, mine does, anyway—unless you’re a Jehovah’s Witness or something.)
The movie was quite funny with its one-liners, but, for the most part, the story didn’t cohere into one fluid comedy. It would have been nice to see what became of the porno, but, despite the title, I guess that wasn’t necessarily the main point of the movie.
